Imphal, the capital city of Manipur witnessed one of the largest congregations of the allied forces and the Japanese army along with the Indian National Army 74 years ago and serves as a platform for remembrance tourism and reconciliation. It is a city where all the action took place during the time the Allied Forces were fighting for Battle of Normandy in the West. It is here that the joined forces of the Indian National Army and the Japanese Army fought the famous Battle of Imphal against the British.

Over 200,000 Japanese, Britons, Indians, Gurkhas and men from several other nations clashed in the hills and valley of Manipur in what has since been described as one of the greatest battles of the Second World War. The allied forces emerged victorious and the Japanese advance towards the then Bengal was checked here by the British and its allies. The decisive battles fought at various battle fields in Manipur also collectively known as the “Battle of Imphal” has been voted as Britain’s Greatest Battle by the National Army Museum, UK on the 20th April 2013.

The Battle of Imphal as a New Tourism product and destination holds an esteemed significance to the participating Countries, the Govt. and especially to the relatives whose forefather took part in this great epic battle. The war cemeteries in Imphal are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and serves as a pilgrimage for the relatives of the brave men who fought this battle.
