It is an excellent specimen of architecture built in black, polished stone with extensive premises comprising of gardens, fountain and wrestling ground. The entire building is eight-angled and has a tower in the middle.

Currently, the first floor is utilised as the residence by the current Maharaja of Kolhapur and the ground floor has been converted into a museum, which is known as Chhatrapati Shahu Museum. The museum has on display memorabilia belonging to the Kolhapur rulers which include royal apparel, jewellery, coins, weapons, silver elephant saddles, Aurangzeb’s swords, etc. The magnificent Darbar Hall is at the centre of the palace and the ambience recreates a glimpse of Maratha history and its regal splendour. The museum also houses a zoo and a ground lake.
