DARGAH KHWAZA SAHIB - AJMER

The landmark of Ajmer, revered by all the sects, one of the holiest Muslim shrines in the country.Millions of pilgrims within the country and abroad, come here the pay homage at the shrine, which is the final resting place of the great Sufi saint-  Khwaja Moin-ud-Din Hasan Chishti, the bestower of boons. It is popularly known as Gharib Nawaz. Built in the early 13th century. It is approached through a gigantic gate with a silver door. The ‘Buland Darwaza’ (or the great door) leads to the second courtyard. The grave of the saint has a domed chamber, encircled by silver railing and marble screen.’Quawwals’ (Singers of Quawwalis) from all over the world, come to sing praises of the saint, charging the atmosphere with a soul-filled current. Here ‘fakirs’ plead for alms, while khadims, (or servants of the saint) look out for pilgrims. Outside the Dargah is a crowded bazaar  filled  with ritual offerings for the Dargah. Two massive ‘Degs’ (cauldrons) originally donated by Mughal Emperor Akbar and Jehangir and later replaced in the 19th century are empty the Degs in a minutes and then jump inside to scrape it clean. This loot is then sold as ‘Tabarruks’ (sacred food).

‘Urs’ (or the death anniversary of the Khwaja) is six-day celebration, attracting people all sects. It begins on the first day of the Islamic month of the Rajab and ends on the sixth day. It is only second in sanctity to Mecca, Medina.
