Wagha/Attari Border, Amritsar

The Wagha/Attari Border with Pakistan lies roughly 30 kms from the Amritsar at Attari on the grand trunk road to Lahore and is one of the main access points overland to the neighbouring nation. A Flag-lowering ceremony is held here daily at sunset by both sides.  It has become famous for the beating the retreat ceremony which includes the closing of international gates and the lowering of the flags of both the countries.About 10000 domestic and foreign visitors visit the place every day. It is an entertainment ceremony and a highly stylized patriotic display as well as an energetic performance. The guards who perform are chosen carefully among those who have great height, ability to perform and imposing stature. Timing of the ceremony is 5.30-6.00 pm daily in the evening.
