Deekshabhoomi is located in Nagpur, and is regarded as a pilgrimage centre of Buddhism in India. Deeksha means ‘act of ordaining’ and bhoomi means the ‘ground’. Deekshabhoomi means the ground where people got ordained as Buddhist. It is in Deekshabhoomi, where Dr.Baba Saheb Ambedkar, along with thousands of his followers, accepted Buddhism on Ashok Vijaya Dashmi, October 14th, 1956 along with over 500,000 followers. This religious mass conversion at one place was the first ever of its kind in history. Thousands of pilgrims visit this very place every year specially on the occasion of Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din (“Mass Conversion Ceremony Day) and on 14th October.

To some extent, Deekshabhoomi dome is the replica of the famous world heritage site “The Sanchi Stupa”. It was designed by famous architect Mr. Sheo Dan Mal. Its construction started in July 1978 and took about 23 years to complete  The major difference between Sanchi Stupa and Deekshabhoomi dome is that the latter is hollow from inside whereas the former is not. It is the largest hollow stupa amongst all Buddhist stupas in the world.
