LAKSHADWEEP _ The Coral Paradise

Lakshadweep, the tiniest Union Territory of India situated in Arabian Sea is considered to be among the most beautiful beach destinations of the country. There are 27 islands in total and each is about 220 to 440 km away from the coast of Kerala.  The destination is the ideal spot to experience serene beaches, blue lagoons and water sports. ‘Kavaratti’ is the capital of Lakshadweep and it is also the principal town of the UT . Only 10 of the Islands namely, Agatti, Amini, Androth, Bitra, Chetlath, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy are inhabited. All other islands are uninhabited or sand banks. Tourism is identified as one of the potential driver of the Lakshadweep economy. Considering the same Lakshadweep Administration is taking several initiatives to develop tourism. The Islands are linked with the main land via Ships and Flights. Agatti Aerodrome on Agatti Island is the only airport of the UT. Lakshadweep is linked to the mainland through CIAL (Cochin International Airport Limited). The other islands are also linked by the Pawan Hans Helicopter or Speed Vessel and ship Service.

The Department of Tourism Development, UT Administration of Lakshadweep is engaged in the development of Film Tourism in the UT of Lakshadweep. The pristine beauty, crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, calm lagoons and unique social life offers a different experience for the film industry. This policy calls for devising guidelines to regulate and promote film tourism in Lakshadweep Islands. The film tourism will have an added advantage of free advertisement for the unique beauty of Lakshadweep. Though till recently Lakshadweep was out of reach for the film industry, considering the importance of film tourism, it has been declared as one of the key elements of Lakshadweep Tourism Policy. As part of this endeavour, the Department will be initiating  various projects for the promotion of film tourism in Lakshadweep.
