Located at the banks of Krishna River, Wai was a town of prominence during the reign of Peshwas. Two important Maratha Brahmin ruling families had their origins in Wai – Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and Gopikabai – wife of Nanasaheb Peshwa. Wai has been a cultural centre known for its beautiful temples with ancient mythological links and is also a favourite tourist destination. It is a stop-over on the way to the hill-stations of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar because of its scenic views. With more than a 100 temples, it is rightly known as the ‘Dakshin Kashi’ of Maharashtra. It is located between the six forts of Pandavgad, Kindergad, Kamalgad, Varaitgad, and the twin forts Chandan-Vandan. These forts are trekker’s paradise that offer a panoramic view of the hills and valleys.

Over the years, Wai has become a hotspot for the shooting of Indian feature films. More than 220 Hindi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Tamil and Telugu movies have been shot here, courtesy its beautiful locations, easy availability of equipment, the cooperative nature of the locals, etc.
